Description
Time to debunk the myth that you “rarely” or “never” wash an handstripped dog or “wait a week” after the handstrip. I don’t know who invented this, but it is like an old wives tale, which is still around.
When handstripping a dog you are manipulating the skin naturally, so the bloodflow will increase. Then you pull out the dead hair and depending on how long the dog went without it, this leaves the pores of the skin slightly open. There is the natural biosystem on the skin (bacteria, mites, fungi etc) which inhabits the skin and the hair follicle and is normally a very useful and balanced system to maintain the natural flora of the skin.
To make sure debris, old skin cells and maybe product like chalk is removed and the pores are closed so the parts of the biosystem which does not belong in the “wrong” place, it is good practice to bath the dog after – using cooler water (approx. 26.5° – 29°C) and soothing shampoo.
